Chapel - The Heart of Our Community

The Christian faith has been at the heart of Dover College’s spiritual identity since the School was founded. In the 21st Century, multi-cultural Britain, we seek to remain true to those Christian foundations, whilst welcoming those from a variety of faith backgrounds (or none). Pupils are encouraged to be open-minded and think for themselves as they encounter the Christian faith in Chapel and on other informal occasions. The spiritual aim of the College is to nurture faith where it exists while arousing curiosity in all pupils towards their spiritual dimension.

The Senior School community worships in the Chapel every Thursday morning and the Prep School has its weekly service on a Friday.

We are lucky enough to be supported by the ministry team from nearby St Mary’s Church, who lead our weekly Thursday morning worship.

Fundamental British Values
The Department for Education emphasises the importance of schools promoting and upholding the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are central to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
According to the Department for Education, British values are defined as:

  • Respect for democracy and active participation in the democratic process
  • Respect for the rule of law and the principles that govern how laws are made and applied in England
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all individuals
  • Respect for individual liberties within the framework of the law
  • Respect for and tolerance of different faiths, beliefs, and cultures

Our school is committed to reflecting these values in everything we do. We aim to nurture and guide our students, helping them grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible, and tolerant adults who contribute positively to British society and the global community. We encourage our students to be creative, independent, open-minded, and respectful—not only towards themselves but also towards others in our school, local community, and the wider world.

PREVENT Duty
As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, schools have a duty to ensure that children are protected from being drawn into terrorism. The Prevent Duty requires that schools take action to prevent extremism in all forms, including Islamic extremism and far-right ideologies such as those espoused by groups like Britain First and the English Defence League.

In line with the Prevent Duty, it is essential that all staff remain vigilant and aware of any concerns that may arise regarding a child’s safety or well-being. This includes recognising the potential expression of extremist views. Staff must be equipped to identify signs of vulnerability to radicalisation and know the appropriate steps to take should any concerns arise.
